I received the following email from a church in search of a youth minister. They found my resume on a ministry networking site.
Hi Jessica,
I noticed your resume and thought you might make a good candidate for us, but we are a traditional church of Christ and therefore would not be interested in a female minister. I just thought I’d ask if you were, indeed, female?
It even feels rude making the inquiry, but we feel the scripture is clear in this matter.
God bless,
What I want to know is how many boys you know named Jessica? I know boys named Jess and Jesse, but no Jessica.
I appreciate a thinly veiled attempt at telling them that you think they are wrong in the eyes of God as much as the next person, but if you think it might be rude to ask – it probably is.

Gosh that made for a good chuckle this morning…at the audacity of the question of course.
I’m nearly 30 and I haven’t met anyone named Jessica who was also male.
Can I help write the response???? PLEASE!!!!

I wish I still got really fired up when I get these emails and phone calls. (This was no where near the first of these I have received, and it for sure isn’t the last one I’ll ever get.) Sadly, I’ve come to accept it as part of trying to be a female minister in the church of Christ.
